Job Search Myths: Holiday Edition

Trees, presents, office parties… The holiday season is here.

At home, we’re busy planning, traveling, and of course, shopping. And at work, we’re racing towards that yearly finish line.

It’s tempting to put your job search on hold. Besides, nobody’s hiring over the holidays, right? Think again. Don’t let this myth keep you from finding your perfect opportunity…

The holiday season might even be your time to shine! Read more to discover why:

Where did everyone go?

Everyone thinks that the holidays aren’t a great time to be looking for a job… which means they’re not out there looking for a job! With less hopeful candidates trying to get their applications in front of hiring managers, the market is a whole lot less crowded than usual… making it easier for you to stand out.

Get the most of your vacation time

Have some time off in December? Spend some time reflecting on your journey and setting your career goals. Review your LinkedIn profile, and have your resume updated to make the application process easy. Intentionally search for your target job opportunities to find that perfect match, and you’ll be setting yourself up for a solid start to the New Year… or maybe sooner.

The original Great Resignation

It’s common for outgoing staff to give their notice at the beginning of December. This is an intentional strategy: they might work for a couple of weeks, then take time off over the holidays before starting their new roles in January. What does all of this mean for you? Companies are feeling the crunch to fill those newly empty positions… before the year comes to a close.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year...

for profits. Whether meeting consumer demand or racing towards fulfilling those end-of-year budgets, December is the busiest time of the year for many industries. Every open position puts pressure on existing staff, not to mention the hiring managers and recruiters tasked with finding that perfect fit. Simply knowing that reinforcements (that’s you!) are on the way offers relief for everyone.

New Year, New Budgets

Speaking of hiring managers, many are eagerly anticipating their brand-new staff budget for the upcoming year. Get yourself first in line for a January 1st start to take advantage of a fresh new hiring budget!

Merry and Bright

It’s a social time of year! Industry communities unwinding, celebrating, and reflecting together make the ideal conditions to step up your networking game. It’s also a perfect time to reach out to your existing contacts with a holiday greeting… and include an update on your career goals while you’re at it! Be yourself, be approachable, and be clear on what you want. Most importantly? People do genuinely want to help… especially at this time of year. The opportunity to connect an employer with a candidate can be gratifying for anyone.

Be intentional with your career journey during this holiday season. Santa might get you a new job this year!
